Subject: Off the shelf foods for storage
Let post some suggestions for foods that I can go right down to the store now, buy as packaged, and have them last at least 2 yrs without health problems. Freshness can suffer a little. They might take up more space, than desired.....but
For starters I would think Spam, powdered Milk and twinkies. (kidding on the twinkies folks, but then again :-0 ) How about pasta noodles, Bisquick, tunfish in a can oil or water based, sardines, potatoe flakes, mixed nuts and quaker oat meal if its sealed better than the paper like containers it comes in. Whats the best bread like starch if you cant grind your own stored wheat or cant get any because sources are hard to find? Please feel free to copy and paste your suggestions into an e-mail message for me also, so I can keep them all as well as posting them here. -Mickey Mickey690X@hotmail.com

Subject: Food from the Grocery Store
I have been buying beans, pearl barley, rice, corn meal, oatmeal, popcorn, split peas, lentils, non fat dry milk, shortening,Top Ramen, spices, soup mix, vitamins, honey, and raisins. With the exception of the dry milk and the vitamins, I repackage everything into 5 gallon food storage buckets. The vitamins and the milk go in the freezer. I have dehydrated about 50 lbs of apples and a lot of bananas. And they are packaged into ziplocks and then into the buckets. The problem with these is for every bag I put away, one bag gets eaten immediatly. I have been canning a lot of tomatos and jelly. Hope this helps. Bugbite

Subject: Grocery Store packaging
What kind of shelf life am I looking at if I take several bags of beans and storage them into a mylar bag with O2 absorbers in a five gallon bucket. I want to give this a try so I can keep a variety of foods, but is smaller packages. Will this work with pasta and flavored rices?

Subject: Potato(e) flakes/slices
I just ordered some pails of Potato slices, granules and flakes. After going to the store and comparing prices and shelf-life of store brands I found that the superpails would be cheaper (even including the cost of shipping) per pound. Also I have the peace of mind that my food is packaged right and will last 5+ times longer.
